[ He's so happy that he honestly doesn't know quite what to do with himself - he's afraid of feeling happy like this. It's the first time anything's worked out for him; if he embraces this emotion, he fears it will collapse and turn to dust like all the other good things he's ever had.
Part of him is still telling him to run away and hide. It's safer that way; he can't be hurt. But that part has become so small now, in the face of the friendships he's made and the success he's actually had. He'd headed towards hope instead of despair, and now it's in his hands. Hikage can't keep the emotions in.
He probably doesn't even wait until they go back to their room to find her. This time, he's the one who reaches out, and he takes her wrist. ]
... You convinced me.

[ hopefully he's prepared, because steph is going to practically leap at him for a hug.
she knew that things were going to work out, but she didn't expect it to be this well. the thought that everyone who died would be reunited before the trial even ended was... more than she could ask for. ]

He was prepared for things to go so horribly wrong; he'd even thought of a bunch of things he could say to her or do for her in case this was the last time they met, but... now he's going to her home with her. He presses his cheek against her hair. There's still a bit of unease in hesitation in his movements, but they're more confident than they ever have been before. ]
Will you still take me?
no subject
[ it's said immediately. as soon as belph gave her the idea for it, she knew she wanted to take them both. there had been no doubt in her mind since making that decision. ]
Gotham is going to blow your mind. Wait until you discover Twitter.

Either way, his body tenses up just a little bit at the confirmation that he'll be going somewhere after this. Maybe not home, but... some place that could be home. With his family, and... with people that might be like family to him, too, given more time. This is an ending he didn't even know was possible. It's so hard to accept it all. He feels like he could cry. But he won't -- he doesn't want her to see him crying. It would be nice if she didn't see any more of his bad sides.
He should probably let go, by this point, but he can't bring himself to. ]
... Living an average life... That sounds nice.

[ she knows that hikage never really understood the whole batgirl thing, so he will probably have to see it happen firsthand to understand that stephanie yeeting herself to near death is honestly a normal occurrence for her. his days of yelling at her to stay safe are very much far from being over. ]
Although you don't have to do anything weird. That'll just be me.
no subject
That's fine. I'm sure things will happen that shake our lives up, good or bad. Even so... I'm looking forward to it. That's what being alive is.
[ he'll take the ups and downs of life if he can give his little sister another chance at it - and if he can be with her, and with Steph and Belph, too, that's just a wonderful side effect.
Although... That does remind him of a question he asked her a long time ago that she never answered. With some effort, he releases her, although he lets his hands linger on her shoulders - there's the sense he doesn't really want to be apart from her, but conversation demands it. He has a rather serious expression on his face. ]
... Besides, I might not mind doing "weird things" if it's with you. [ a beat. He's bad at this. Might as well be blunt. ] How do you see me? Am I just your partner?
[ he thinks that he's fairly transparent, even if he's never honest about how he's feeling... but Steph is harder to read. She surely likes him. Whether or not she was serious about wanting his attention is another matter entirely. ]

well, she expected that this would come up again. it was easier to address it with belph, but mostly because steph didn't actually believe belph had any feelings for her; she just wanted to get some sort of confession out of the way so he could reject her. and then he did not actually reject her, and now she's sort of stuck in a kind of odd limbo here.
and yet, this is still somehow not the most awkward romantic situation she has gotten into. stephanie is not sure what that says about herself. ]
I like you. [ she'll be blunt about that. ] It's just a little... complicated right now.
no subject
But maybe it wouldn't be. He is, perhaps, unexpectedly calm in the face of her reply, although his eyes do widen a little when she says she likes him - just for a brief moment. ]
... Shirasu?
[ hah ]
no subject
[ she looks genuinely surprised, which she probably shouldn't. she did have a crush on him at one point, but that kind of faded into "friends who just kissed twice and would sometimes hold hands for no reason," which doesn't have to be romantic at all?
it's a little odd to think that she does still consider shirasu a friend, even after he tried really hard to sabotage them. ]
... no. Um. We're just friends.
no subject
[ his brow scrunches up, but it's not in frustration - it's more because he can't figure out how else it would be complicated. Was it the boy from her home that she hit with the brick? She'd called him an ex, but old flames could be rekindled... Somehow, though, he doubts it.
Hilariously, Belph never even crosses his mind. ]
-- No, nevermind. That's fine. I won't waste your time or mine until the day you change your mind. Mine isn't made up, either. [ a beat. ] Just being liked satisfies me. Even I'm not selfish enough to press you for more than that.
no subject
... will you still hold my hand and stuff?
[ steph is aware that that is actually a selfish request considering steph just more or less told hikage to ask again later, but.
it'll be sad, if this stopped. ]
no subject
that actually hurts, unlike the wishy-washy rejection. Fortunately, Hikage is in high spirits (for once), so he doesn't snap at her, but he does frown. ]
... Are you just going to toy with me, Steph?
[ he's not a very touchy-feely person, which he's sure she knows. Holding hands with people he's just friends with is a little outside of his comfort zone. And if this is going to be a dead-end emotional path to pursue, he'd rather not drag it out beyond reason.
on the bright side, he slipped and actually called her by her nickname...?! ]
no subject
I haven't done that this entire time.
[ it's said with a frown, but she won't ask again unless he brings it up himself. ]
no subject
No, he definitely is. He knew from the beginning she probably couldn't give him what he was looking for... ]
... I know. [ even if he hadn't exactly believed it for most of their time together. ] That's not really it. It's just...
[ there's no way to word this that isn't embarrassing and pathetic. ]
... I want... to be important to you.
[ he's lonely. he wants steph to love him, not just hold his hand. ]
no subject
[ it kind of feels like a few weeks ago, when she was trying to convince him that she genuinely cared about him for reasons other than just their partnership. and once again, she's at a loss as to how to get him to understand what she means without saying the wrong thing.
maybe the truth? ]
I told you, I like you. And I mean it. But I... also like Belph. [ a pause. that's actually the first time she said that out loud, she realizes. she had only kissed him before. ] And he said that he needs to think about it. So, I need to give him time to do that, I think.
no subject
[ the answer is apparently unexpected enough that Hikage can't help but repeat his name. There's no disdain or anything - just surprise.
When he thinks about it, though, it makes sense. From his perspective, they hadn't seemed very close... but they'd been making a concentrate effort to hide their relationship the entire time. In reality, she'd probably been spending as much time with Belph as she had with him. Hikage knew better than anyone how Belph was easy to talk to (somehow.) For a person like Steph -- they must have been fast friends.
Logically, he should probably be jealous, or something. He'd been jealous of Shirasu, after all. But, strangely, he isn't, not even a little. He's not sure what to make of that. Sighing, he rubs at his face - and when his hand drops, his expression seems a fraction lighter. ]
... Well, if he's my competition, then I guess I don't mind.
no subject
You don't?
[ never mind, she still ended up saying something like that. ]
no subject
[ her reaction makes him feel a little awkward again, and he scratches his head. How does he explain it? Maybe it's because he likes both of them a lot already. Belph is trustworthy and smart, and he's a good listener. He's certainly easier to talk to than Hikage is, he's sure. The idea of them finding happiness with each other is... fine. He's sure he'd be a little sad. But if they still thought of him, too, then it might be okay. He knows Belph cares about him, too. ]
... That doesn't mean I'm giving up, though. I'm stubborn. You shouldn't have teased me so much and made me think all these things. [ a beat. Then, off-handedly, almost certainly to deflect from that comment: ] Has anyone told you that you have terrible taste in men? You do.
no subject
Sorry, but you're kind of fun to tease. [ she smiles. ] And yeah. I've heard that once or twice. It hasn't been true here though?
no subject
[ he doesn't even know Belph's whole story, but he does know for a fact that the two of them are both a handful. As far as boyfriends go, they're both fixer-uppers, so to speak... Still, a smirk's returned to his face. Telling him the truth was definitely the right move. It feels less like a soft rejection and more like telling him he's on hold - or in competition. Knowing he's the second choice doesn't feel great; still, when the first choice is Belph, it's hard for him to be upset.
(He likes to think he's good at winning things, anyway.) ]
Fine. I changed my mind. I'll let you hold my hand. You'll just have to deal with the consequences.
no subject
she holds her hand out. ]
How kind of you for leaving me with a warning.
